My Short Anime Reviews

LAST UPDATE: 6th May 2013

I've been trying to catch up into watching a lot of anime, and there are still lots I haven't watched yet. For those I've watched however, I will post my one or two-paragraph spoiler-free opinion about the anime and give a score at the end. These are mostly based on my own opinion on how I view them, so don't feel bad if my opinions are different than yours. If anything, you can just discuss about it in the comments.

Let's begin.

Accel World

The science fiction is very nicely done and the plot build-up is well brought up. Characters may seem a bit annoying, but there is some good development at certain points. There is plenty of comedy, but none worth for me to share about. The antagonist in the 2nd-half of this anime (2nd season?) is probably the biggest pain in the ass I've ever seen in my life. Overall, this is a great anime that I can highly recommend to those into a deep storyline and intense action.

Final Score: 8 / 10

Sword Art Online

Oh boy, this one. The reason this anime has gotten its fame is its character design and intense action. While I do notice and agree with them as I watch this anime, everything else disappoints me. Character designs are excellent, but it's the complete reverse for character development. The protagonist has met with a lot of characters that mostly only appear in just one episode, and that's obviously not enough for character development.

The first two episodes are excellent because they hype up the audience with a nice cover of how SAO would work in story and action, but dies down in a really steep slope from the 3rd episode onwards. If you are going to watch this anime, I'd recommend watching the first two, and then stop, turn around, and walk away. The rest of the anime will disappoint viewers who are deep into the story (I hope I phrased that right). If you're still curious about SAO, read the manga instead since that one contains missing scenes regarding important character development and storyline (at least that's according to my friend).

Final Score: 5 / 10

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

This is a very interesting anime to be honest. The plot build-up was done slowly and excellently, meaning we get to see something new and intense in each new episode. Most of the action scenes can be both awesome and disturbing since it usually results in a disaster (r.i.p Mami). The character designs are also pretty good and the development is just fantastic, as we see how Madoka finalizes her decision at the end after the build-up in the past episodes.

I'd recommend this to those into supernatural and creepy stuff, or simply for its story. If you don't mind lolis, then it's truly worth the shot. You're gonna be sitting through a hell of the ride once you're into this anime.

Final Score: 9 / 10

Dog Days

(Opinions are based on first season only, I've heard but never watched the second one yet.)

To be as fair to this anime as possible... this anime is fair. Well, the story is very good; but the thing that bothers me is that comedy is overused somehow in EVERY SINGLE EPISODE which is quite annoying. The worst ones are in the last-half episodes where there's somehow a piece of comedy used in the most serious situations. Other than that, the main character gives me a picture of a mix between Sora (from KH series) and Tidus (from FFX), but I'm not sure whether he's more or less annoying because of his stupidity (?). In the end, I'd recommend this to those who prefer comedy mostly, but not to those who are mainly serious business (like me).

Final Score: 7 / 10

C^3 - Cube x Cursed x Curious

First up notable is the first OP's song and scenes. The song Endless Story by Tamura Yukari is very beautiful, but the opening itself is... uh... that's all you have to show us? Usually in anime openings, you see short clips and scenes of what's to come in the anime itself. This one, however, is literally showing the three heroines dancing and posing in different ways, in both sad and happy moods in a sakura bloom forest. That's about it... ...On to the anime itself.

The story is hard for me to say, since it's a mix between comedy slice-of-life and bloody action mixed here. There are disturbing scenes in both sides (some seem like hentai scenes, and some are really something you see in a horror film) even the character designs look more like they only belong in the slice-of-life genre. The second season bothered me even more with the new character intoduced. Who or what exactly is Kuroe? It was never explained ever since regarding her background or why she is sided with the allies. To wrap things up, it's a good anime. If you enjoy a mix between the two genres, this is worth your time. It's not for me though, but I'll give it a fair score anyways. Also, loli warning.

Final Score: 7 / 10

AKB0048

(Opinions are based on first season only, I've heard but never watched the second one yet.)

The character designs and development deserve a great score in this one... except Nagisa's. Her moments to shine are in the first few episodes and the last three episodes of the first season. In any other episodes in between, Nagisa is barely noticable since other characters get their spotlight with their own scenes, comedy or not. The story is excellent and the science fiction is marvelous. There are a few comedy moments, but it's a good thing they weren't overused as much as the two anime mentioned above. There are also a bunch of good songs by AKB48 (yeah, it's really an actual band in Japan) and NO NAME intoduced. If you like Japanese music and great plot (and more lolis), this will definitely interest you to put in your watch list.

I'll probably get into Season 2 sometime later.

Final Score: 8 / 10
